Watch the video.

5 Tips for Surviving Thanksgiving.

Quick tip#1

You can do this whenever you have time. And they are beautiful cards.
www.jacquielawson.com

Quick tip #2

When there are only two of you cooking a whole meal seems kind of a waste. However, it does not seem like Thanksgiving or any other holiday without the traditional meal. Well . . . This little resturaunt well known in the middle and west of our country will prepare the meal to go including pie.
www.sharis.com

Quick tip #3

Looking for something to do and not sure what to do for entertainment. Okay, well first this was not a problem 20 years ago, now was it? How about some soft music and a little dancing right there in your home? Wow, remember those days when you could dance all night or how about a board game. And there is always reading aloud. OR if you really can’t think of anything and none of this is tempting there is always T.V.

Quick tip #4

Next time you are in the grocery buy a bag of raw peanuts. Place them on a baking sheet with a lip (to prevent spillage), set the oven at 190 degrees and roast them. It will take two to three hours, not only is this nutritious but the house smells so good. Be careful not to get burned when they first come out.

Quick tip #5

Remember when, where and how you met? See if you can remember all the firsts in your life. Use a paper and pen, (no one will see this but you, unless you chose otherwise). First kiss, first home, first car and so on; this can be a lot of fun.

Medicare Open Enrollment: What’s your back-up pla

By: Jonathan Blum, CMS Acting Principal Deputy Administrator and Director, Center for Medicare

We all like to plan ahead – whether it’s planning for a road trip next summer or planning a big family get-together. Despite our best planning, uncertainty is a fact of life. We always need a back-up plan. What if the car breaks down?  What if it snows on the day of the get-together?

Nobody likes to think of back-up plans when it comes to our health, but health can be as unpredictable as the weather. It’s hard to know what you’ll feel like next week, much less what health care you’ll need next year. But that’s exactly what you need to think about when you’re shopping for health coverage during Medicare Open Enrollment – which ends on December 7.

Even when future needs can be hard to forecast, taking stock of your current situation can help. Review your prescription drug needs, and look for a plan that meets those needs. Plans may vary in what drugs they cover, and some may have special rules that you must follow before they cover a drug.

You may have other health insurance from a current or past job, or through a family member. If you do, you’ll want to understand exactly how that other coverage works with Medicare. You may decide to keep what you have now – and that’s ok.

It’s worth your time to take a look and compare coverage. Use the Medicare Plan Finder to look at all of the health and drug plan options in your area. If you still need help comparing, call 1‑800‑MEDICARE (1‑800‑633‑4227). TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048.

While you can’t predict everything in life, you can do your best to be prepared. Medicare will be there, stronger than ever, to help.

Medigap Supplemental Insurance Covers What Medicare Doesn’t – (4 of 5)

Senior welfare home care, san diego, california

Medigap Supplemental Insurance Covers What Medicare Doesn’t – How to Handle the Medicare Maze (4 of 5)

Medicare supplemental insurance, also referred to as a “medigap policy”, is private health insurance for those enrolled in Medicare Part A and B. Medicare pays none of the costs for a medigap policy, which helps pay for costs that Medicare doesn’t cover such as copays, co-insurance, and deductibles. It also does not cover Medicare parts C and D.

Medicare supplemental insurance guide.
This official government guide has important information about the following:
• What is a Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance) policy
• What Medigap policies cover
• Your rights to buy a Medigap policy
• How to buy a Medigap policy

This guide can help if you’re thinking about buying a Medigap policy or already have one.

How to use this guide

There are two ways to find the information you need:
1. The “Table of Contents” on pages 3–4 can help you find the sections you need.
2. The “List of Topics” on pages 53–56 lists topics in this guide and the page number of where to find them.

Who should read this guide?

This guide helps people with Medicare understand Medigap (also called “Medicare Supplement Insurance”) policies. A Medigap policy is a type of private insurance that helps you pay for some of the costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover.

Types of Medicare Coverage – How to Handle the Medicare Maze (3 of 5)

Senior welfare home care, san diego, california

Four Parts to Medicare – How to Handle the Medicare Maze (3 of 5)

Open Enrollment begins a little earlier this year. Change your Medicare health or prescription drug coverage for 2013. Open Enrollment: October 15 – December 7, 2012.

The four parts of Medicare are covered in depth in the third entry from the “How to Handle the Medicare Maze” video series.

– Part A: Hospital Insurance
– Part B: Medical Insurance
– Part C: Medicare Advantage
– Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage

  1. Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)

PART A helps cover medically necessary inpatient care in hospitals. It also helps cover skilled nursing facility, hospice care and home health care.

However, you must meet certain requirements to get these benefits. One way you become eligible for Part A is just by turning 65, even if you’re still working. During your working years, you have probably paid for Part A through payroll deductions.

Part A doesn’t cover all your expenses – you are responsible for copayments and a deductible when you use Part A services.

  2. Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)

Medicare Part B helps cover doctor’s services and outpatient care. It also helps pay for some preventative services and services Part A doesn’t cover including physical and occupational therapy and some home health care – if these services are medically necessary.

It’s important that you sign up for Part B when you become eligible. If you don’t, your Part B premium may be higher.

Parts A and B together cover much of the medical care you need, but not all of it. For example, Part A and B (called Original Medicare) do not cover prescription drugs. This is where Parts C and D come into play.

  3. Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans)

Medicare Advantage plans are health plan options approved by Medicare and administered by private health insurance companies like Humana.

These plans include all the benefits of Original Medicare and more like prescription drug coverage and annual physical exams that Medicare doesn’t cover.

In addition, some plans offer extra services like wellness programs and fitness center memberships at no additional cost. Finally, Medicare Advantage plans may reduce out-of-pocket expenses.

Several types of Medicare Advantage plans are available:

    • HMO – Health Maintenance Organization
    • PPO – Preferred Provider Organization
    • PFFS – Private Fee-for-Service

You must be enrolled in both Medicare Parts A and B to join a Medicare Advantage plan, which then acts as a alternative for Parts A and B.

  4. Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

Medicare Part D helps cover prescription drugs and like Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D is available only from private insurers that contract with Medicare.

This coverage may help lower your costs and protect against higher costs in the future.

Remember, you don’t get Part D automatically – you have to select it. You can enroll in a stand-alone plan or enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage.

You may be able to get extra help to pay for your prescription drug premiums and costs. To see if you qualify for getting extra help, call:

    • 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). TTY/TDD users should call 1-877-486-2048, 24 hours a day/7 days a week;
    • The Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. TTY/TDD users should call, 1-800-325-0778; or Your State Medicaid Office

FBI on Reverse Mortgage Scam – San Diego, CA

Senior welfare home care, san diego, california

FBI Fraud Warning Senior: Reverse Mortgage Scam

FBI Fraud Target: Senior Citizens – What to look for

The FBI’s Common Fraud Schemes webpage provides tips on how you can protect you and your family from fraud.

Reverse Mortgage Scams

The FBI and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Office of Inspector General (HUD-OIG) urge consumers, especially senior citizens, to be vigilant when seeking reverse mortgage products. Reverse mortgages, also known as home equity conversion mortgages (HECM), have increased more than 1,300 percent between 1999 and 2008, creating significant opportunities for fraud perpetrators.

Reverse mortgage scams are engineered by unscrupulous professionals in a multitude of real estate, financial services, and related companies to steal the equity from the property of unsuspecting senior citizens or to use these seniors to unwittingly aid the fraudsters in stealing equity from a flipped property.

In many of the reported scams, victim seniors are offered free homes, investment opportunities, and foreclosure or refinance assistance. They are also used as straw buyers in property flipping scams. Seniors are frequently targeted through local churches and investment seminars, as well as television, radio, billboard, and mailer advertisements.

A legitimate HECM loan product is insured by the Federal Housing Authority. It enables eligible homeowners to access the equity in their homes by providing funds without incurring a monthly payment. Eligible borrowers must be 62 years or older who occupy their property as their primary residence and who own their property or have a small mortgage balance. See the FBI/HUD Intelligence Bulletin for specific details on HECMs as well as other foreclosure rescue and investment schemes.

Tips for Avoiding Reverse Mortgage Scams:

  • Do not respond to unsolicited advertisements.
  • Be suspicious of anyone claiming that you can own a home with no down payment.
  • Do not sign anything that you do not fully understand.
  • Do not accept payment from individuals for a home you did not purchase.
  • Seek out your own reverse mortgage counselor.

If you are a victim of this type of fraud and want to file a complaint, please submit information through our electronic tip line or through your local FBI office. You may also file a complaint with HUD-OIG at www.hud.gov/complaints/fraud_waste.cfm or by calling HUD’s hotline at 1-800-347-3735.

Read our intelligence bulletin on reverse mortgages.

FBI on Telemarketing Fraud – San Diego, CA

Senior welfare home care, san diego, california

FBI Fraud Warning Seniors:Telemarketing Fraud

FBI Fraud Target: Senior Citizens – What to look for

The FBI’s Common Fraud Schemes webpage provides tips on how you can protect you and your family from fraud.

Telemarketing Fraud

If you are age 60 or older—and especially if you are an older woman living alone—you may be a special target of people who sell bogus products and services by telephone. Telemarketing scams often involve offers of free prizes, low-cost vitamins and health care products, and inexpensive vacations.

There are warning signs to these scams. If you hear these—or similar—“lines” from a telephone salesperson, just say “no thank you,” and hang up the telephone:

  • “You must act now, or the offer won’t be good.”
  • “You’ve won a free gift, vacation, or prize.” But you have to pay for “postage and handling” or other charges.
  • “You must send money, give a credit card or bank account number, or have a check picked up by courier.” You may hear this before you have had a chance to consider the offer carefully.
  • “You don’t need to check out the company with anyone.” The callers say you do not need to speak to anyone, including your family, lawyer, accountant, local Better Business Bureau, or consumer protection agency.
  • “You don’t need any written information about the company or its references.”
  • “You can’t afford to miss this high-profit, no-risk offer.”

Tips for Avoiding Telemarketing Fraud:

It’s very difficult to get your money back if you’ve been cheated over the telephone. Before you buy anything by telephone, remember:

  • Don’t buy from an unfamiliar company. Legitimate businesses understand that you want more information about their company and are happy to comply.
  • Always ask for and wait until you receive written material about any offer or charity. If you get brochures about costly investments, ask someone whose financial advice you trust to review them. But, unfortunately, beware—not everything written down is true.
  • Always check out unfamiliar companies with your local consumer protection agency, Better Business Bureau, state attorney general, the National Fraud Information Center, or other watchdog groups. Unfortunately, not all bad businesses can be identified through these organizations.
  • Obtain a salesperson’s name, business identity, telephone number, street address, mailing address, and business license number before you transact business. Some con artists give out false names, telephone numbers, addresses, and business license numbers. Verify the accuracy of these items.
  • Before you give money to a charity or make an investment, find out what percentage of the money is paid in commissions and what percentage actually goes to the charity or investment.
  • Before you send money, ask yourself a simple question. “What guarantee do I really have that this solicitor will use my money in the manner we agreed upon?”
  • Don’t pay in advance for services. Pay services only after they are delivered.
  • Be wary of companies that want to send a messenger to your home to pick up money, claiming it is part of their service to you. In reality, they are taking your money without leaving any trace of who they are or where they can be reached.
  • Always take your time making a decision. Legitimate companies won’t pressure you to make a snap decision.
  • Don’t pay for a “free prize.” If a caller tells you the payment is for taxes, he or she is violating federal law.
  • Before you receive your next sales pitch, decide what your limits are—the kinds of financial information you will and won’t give out on the telephone.
  • Be sure to talk over big investments offered by telephone salespeople with a trusted friend, family member, or financial advisor. It’s never rude to wait and think about an offer.
  • Never respond to an offer you don’t understand thoroughly.
  • Never send money or give out personal information such as credit card numbers and expiration dates, bank account numbers, dates of birth, or social security numbers to unfamiliar companies or unknown persons.
  • Be aware that your personal information is often brokered to telemarketers through third parties.
  • If you have been victimized once, be wary of persons who call offering to help you recover your losses for a fee paid in advance.
  • If you have information about a fraud, report it to state, local, or federal law enforcement agencies.

File a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center or contact your local FBI office.
